Top Things to Do On Your Tutukaka Northland Trip | Tutukaka Travel Ideas | What To Do In Tutukaka

Tutukaka is my fav town in Northland New Zealand. This seaside town on the North Island promotes an eco-friendly, sustainable, and health conscious lifestyle. And this is not only seen in their products and services offered, but this lifestyle is seen throughout the entire community. The Tutukaka Coast is known as a “Plastic Free” coast. They feel as a coastal community it’s so important to be an advocate of reducing plastic in our oceans. So while visiting bring your reusable shopping bags, don’t ask for a straw with your drink, and make sure you get your coffee refill using your very own Keep Cup. The community invites you to help them make the Tutukaka Coast Plastic Free. Now, go ahead, read on for the best of the Tutukaka Coast!

Where to Rest Your Head

I’m not sure a hotel can get more vibrantly playful as the Oceans Resort Hotel in Tutukaka. I had no idea I was staying in such a colorful and fun hotel when I check in late at night. But when I wandered the town, with my Keep Cup coffee, the next morning I quickly fell in love with this colorful hotel and it’s very desirable location. The 27 room hotel features views overlooking the harbour and has prime access to Poor Knight, one of the best diving locations in the world. If you dive this is a must on your Tutukaka list.

Take a Hike

The Tutukaka Coast is known for its impressive coastline so why not hike the coast to really get the full experience?! There are a large variety of walks accessible on the Tutukaka Coast. You can pick up pamphlets for more on your hiking options while in town.

For my coastal walk I parked at the Whale Bay car park and decided to take on the Morrison Reserve track down to Matapouri Beach. There was a sign at the car park with trail options, I went ahead and took a picture of this to make sure I stayed on track. Trails are clearly marked as well. And the best part?!?..You get breathtaking coastal views and a beach day all in one. And of course you’ll be spending some time at this gorgeous beach! So pack a bathing suit, sunscreen, and a towel!

Be A Mermaid

Hidden at Matapouri Beach are the Mermaid Pools. Not for the faint of heart, a challenging hike through the New Zealand bush leads you to these glorious pools of water. If you’re daring enough to hit the trails, to the Mermaid Pools, just make sure to use common sense. Tides can quickly change so be aware of your surroundings and make sure it’s low tide.

How do you get there you ask?! Here’s a great post with detailed instructions on finding the trail. This was my favorite experience in New Zealand, but rather dangerous as well. Be safe and read up on the pools before you visit!
